Not having been able to get married in Paris a few days earlier, John Lennon and Yoko Ono chartered a plane to Gibraltar, with the advice of Apple assistant Peter Brown, who arranged everything.
“We chose Gibraltar because it was quiet, a British colony and very friendly. We tried to get married in several places first. I proposed to get married on the ferry and we would have made it to France married there, but they wouldn’t. We dealt with the embassies, but the residence in Germany took two weeks and three weeks in France were necessary” …John Lennon
They went straight to the British Consulate office in Gigraltar, where they were married in a 10-minute ceremony conducted by registrar Cecil Wheeler. Since Gibraltar was a British colony, and Lennon was a British citizen, they were able to do it on short notice.
“So we were in Paris and we were calling Peter Brown, and we said, ‘We want to get married. Where can we go?’ And he called back and said, ‘Gibraltar is the only place.’ So…OK, let’s go! ‘ And we went there and it was beautiful . There is the Pillar of Hercules, and it was also symbolically called “The End of the World” in one period or the “Pillar of Hercules”, but they thought that the outside world was a mystery from there, so it was like the door to the world. . So we liked each other in the symbolic sense, and the rock foundation of our relationship……John Lennon, 1980.
