Led Zeppelin and The Beatles

Here’s some audio from the Let It Be tapes of Harrison not being very interested in listening to the first Zeppelin album:

Audio of George Harrison Hearing About Led Zeppelin

John Lennon on Led Zeppelin

Q: “Do you think in terms of feelings? Do you think of music, popular music, in terms of emotional reaction as opposed to saying something…”
JOHN: “I think in any of those terms. You know, I just think it’s either something I like or don’t like or it’s heavy or it’s light. I like heavy music, I call it rock. I like Zeppelin, I’ve only heard a couple you know, they’re okay.

Lennon said this about them :
“I don’t really know much of what they’re about. But one thing’s for sure, Jimmy Page is a bloody good guitarist”.

Jimmy Page Talks About The Beatles 1976

is Led Zeppelin “Rain Song” influenced by Beatles?

Jimmy Page mentioned that he indeed wrote the music to “The Rain Song” as a sarcastic nod to George Harrison. It was said that George once made some sort of comment to him along the lines of “the problem with you guys is you don’t do any ballads”. Page reportedly mirrored the first strums of “The Rain Song” to mimic the intro of “Something”.

George Harrison was reportedly the inspiration for “The Rain Song” when he made a comment to Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, about the fact that the group never wrote any ballads. In Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page, biographer Brad Tolinski quotes Page:

George Hariison was talking to Bonzo one evening and said, ‘The problem with you guys is that you never do ballads.’ I said, ‘I’ll give him a ballad,’ and I wrote ‘Rain Song,’ which appears on House of the Holy. In fact, you’ll notice I even quote ‘Something’ in the song’s first two chords.

Paul and Pete Townsend have been friends for some time, just as Ringo and Keith Moon (and for a while 1973-1975, John Lennon), hung out a lot. John and the Who were all at the Rolling Stones’ “Rock & Roll Circus” in late 1968. I know George and Robert Plant spent an evening talking around 1972, where GH was surprised that Led Zep did two hour shows, whereas the Beatles maxed out at 30 minutes.
I think there is some brief discussion in the Let It Be tapes (January 1969) about the newly-formed Led Zeppelin, but there is no opinion rendered. I don’t think theBeatles were talking to each other when Black Sabbath came forth, and I don’t think their religion would have jibed with George’s.
