Her grandparents were originally from the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Olivia attended junior high and high school at Hawthorne High School and graduated in 1963. She later worked in marketing at A&M Records, where George Harrison later had a recording contract with his Dark Horse Records label.
By 1974 she had gotten a job as a secretary in the executive offices of a record label, none other than A&M Records: the place where the most spiritual Beatle, George Harrison, had signed a contract to record new albums.
The first contact between them was very cordial and respectful through very polite work phone calls, later they fell in love, got married and in 1978 George and Olivia had their only son: Dhani. Name that corresponds to something deeper than a harmonic sound, the word Dhani is formed by the sixth and seventh notes of the Hindu musical scale: dha and ni, this after Harrison was a great admirer of Indian music, which he discovered through his friendship with Ravi Shanka.
She also practiced meditation and read Indian philosophy, as well as being a vegetarian before she met George. It was these coincidences that perhaps led her to become Harrison’s second wife, whom she married on September 2, 1978 and had their son Dhani Harrison, after the guitarist separated from his first wife Pattie Boyd.
Together with Yoko Ono, Linda McCartney and Barbara Bach, Olivia founded the Romanian Angel Appeal in the early 1990s, which provided aid to impoverished children in a devastated Romania.
After George’s death she went on to manage her husband’s shares within Apple Corps (along with Paul, Ringo and Yoko). In fact Olivia was appointed Director of Apple. Maybe she was proposed for that area because of her experience running a record label (A&M).
In 2002 Olivia produced, among many other things, the “Concert for George”, whose album and DVD won a Grammy for best music video in 2005. Olivia also produced the mini-documentary on the Traveling Wilburys, which accompanies the Traveling Wilburys’ record collection box set. She also co-produced the documentary “Living in the Material World” with Martin Scorssese, which won two Emmys in 2012.
As a result of his work with Scorssese they founded “The Film Foundation”, a foundation dedicated to restoring old films. The first films they restored were those of Charlie Chaplin, but they have also restored Mexican films such as “Enamorada” by Emilio Fernandez.
She is currently the president of the “Material World Foundation” which helps dozens of projects around the world, including Mexico, where they give scholarships to young university students, as well as helping in other issues such as when she supported Salma Hayek, when they donated 200 000 dollars for the earthquakes in Mexico in 2017.
