Harry Benson (photographer): “While the other three were riding in a horse-drawn carriage and goofing around for photographers, George was sick in bed at the Plaza Hotel.
At the hotel, George received many telegrams wishing him well. Laying them down sitting on his lap he tried to read them all, he was wearing silk pajamas, a gift from someone, even though these pajamas were too small for him and covered his legs only up to his knees.
In the afternoon, he received a call from a radio talk show to interview him and ask about his health. The radio station said, “We’re on the air in bed with George sick.”
They brought him a huge speaker and placed it near his bed so he could listen to the radio.”
