Zak Starkey Regrets Turning Down Black Sabbath Gig With Ozzy Osbourne

As the music world continues to mourn the passing of legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne, heartfelt tributes have poured in from fellow musicians, fans, and collaborators around the globe. One particularly emotional message came from Zak Starkey, son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, who revealed that he once had the chance to perform with Black Sabbath—a dream opportunity he sadly turned down.

The Missed Opportunity That Still Haunts Zak Starkey

In a touching Instagram post, Zak Starkey shared a screenshot of an email from Sharon Osbourne, offering him the role of drummer for upcoming Black Sabbath performances and a studio recording with famed producer Rick Rubin.

“Black Sabbath is headlining Download on June 10 and then Lollapalooza in August,” Sharon wrote. “The guys need a drummer for their album, which will be recorded in September… We would probably need you for 2-3 weeks for the album. Also, they need a drummer to play at Lollapalooza which is on August 3 in Chicago.”

While the offer might have been humorous in tone at times—Sharon jokingly added, “Ozzy wants to have sex with you while he is singing ‘Iron Man’”—the opportunity itself was a rare and prestigious one. Unfortunately, Starkey had to decline, citing other professional commitments and possibly a tendon injury that plagued him at the time.

“Regrets, I’ve Had a Few”: Zak Starkey Remembers Ozzy

Though known for his work with The Who and Oasis, Zak Starkey admitted that turning down the chance to work with Ozzy Osbourne was a rare regret in his career.

“Regrets I’ve had a few — this is one — (not the sex part!)” he wrote, sharing his reflections with a touch of humor and humility.

But beyond the missed gig, Starkey also penned a heartfelt tribute to Ozzy, calling him:

“One of the greatest, natural, brilliant singers of all time.”

He continued by offering condolences to Ozzy’s family and encouraging fans to revisit Black Sabbath’s “Never Say Die” album:

“I send much love and strength to his family at this sad sad time. If u aren’t familiar with the Never Say Die record – get into it – it’s so far out – X.”

Ozzy’s Final Show and Powerful Legacy

Ozzy Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, just weeks after performing a final show with Black Sabbath at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham—a historic moment that also raised nearly $200 million for charity.

On July 30, the city of Birmingham paid tribute to their native rock hero with a public funeral procession, complete with a performance by Bostin Brass, leading to the Black Sabbath Bridge and Bench, a local landmark honoring the band’s legacy.

Conclusion: A Legacy Larger Than Life

Zak Starkey’s story is a poignant reminder of the once-in-a-lifetime moments that define careers and lives. His honest reflection highlights not only Ozzy Osbourne’s immense impact on rock music, but also how deeply his presence was felt across generations and genres.

Whether on stage, in the studio, or through stories like these, Ozzy Osbourne’s voice and spirit will live on forever.
