“When John and I met, his guitar had four strings. John’s mother showed him some chords. He had a cheap guitar with a small round resonator hole and only four strings. John didn’t even know that the guitar had to have six strings. He played chords like a banjo, stretching his fingers. I exclaimed, “What are you doing?” He thought it should be like this. We showed him the correct chords – E, A and others – and had him string the fifth and sixth strings, I was the youngest in the band and I know John was terribly upset with that.
