14 September 1966 George Harrison and his wife Pattie fly from London to Bombay (Mumbai)

It is George’s first time in India. The purpose of the visit was to take sitar lessons with Ravi Shankar, and to study yoga.
George had met Shankar in London in June, at the home of Ayana Deva Angadi, founder of the Asian Music Circle. Then they met again at George’s house, who in a couple of lessons had learned from him how to sit and hold the sitar.
So in September, after the last tour and while John was filming How I Won the War, George had decided to go to India for about six weeks.
The Harrisons stayed at the Taj Mahal hotel in Bombay, under the names of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Wells.
George said it was a great time for him, visiting temples and going shopping. Not to mention the sitar lessons. They traveled extensively and eventually arrived in Kashmir, where they lived on a houseboat in the foothills of the Himalayas.
The photos show a relaxed and happy Harrison. George finally felt free and convinced the rest of the band to come back with him 18 months later.
