JANUARY 13, 2010 – A plaque of the Beatles’ iconic yellow submarine, which was stolen six months earlier from Liverpool’s Albert Dock, was set to be replaced by a new creation. The 1.5 meter (5 ft.) design featured the faces of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison peering through its portholes. The new submarine would hang outside the museum dedicated to the band, The Beatles Story.Made of marine plywood, the new is hoped to will survive the city’s winter weather and the cold stormy winds blowing in from the sea. The model was produced by the museum’s employees Daniel Rogers and John Clarke. Mr Rogers is a big Beatles fan with a background in art.He said: “I was asked if I would create a new submarine and I jumped at the chance. “The design is slightly different to ensure that it doesn’t infringe any copyright laws and I’ve incorporated the faces of the Fab Four. It took several weeks to make and I can’t wait to see it positioned outside the Beatles Story.”Jerry Goldman, managing director of the Beatles Story, said: “Although we are disappointed that the original Yellow Submarine was never returned we are delighted with its replacement.”We have increased our security measures to ensure that such a selfish act will never happen again.”A large model representation of the actual submarine, used in the video of the Beatles’ song Yellow Submarine, is currently located outside Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
