A zany little volume by John Lennon. called “In His Own Write” makes no sense as literature, but is making the kind of dollars and cents everyone understands at the cash register. The publishers is has sold more than 70.000 copies at $2.50 cach.
By way of introduction and other of the Beatles, Paul McCartney says “if it seems funny than that’s enough”
Lots of folks thin both text and the cockeyed drawings are funny. Lennon takes nothing, least of all himself, very seriously. Puns, misspellings, whimsy and just plain nonsense make the going difficult if you try for anything approaching real understanding.
Concerning his home town Liverpool he comments “There is a lot to do in Liddy-pool, but not all convenience” About a “Safairy with Whide Hunder” he writes
“in the jumble.. the mighty jumble.. Whide humble sleeps tonight.. Jumble Jim, whom shall remain nameless, was slowly but slowly asking his way through the underpants, underware he was being washed by Whide Hungry)….
Then there’s the one about “Treasure Ivan”
“In a little seashore pub in Bristow, a ragged gathering of rags are drinking and making melly (before sailing to sea a serge of grate treashy on a sudden Isle far across the ocean)”
“Belay there me ‘earty scabs’ says Large John Saliver entering” and so on.
Nothing seems able to bust up Beatles.
