One of the tour’s most memorable moments happens after the show when The Beatles, Helen Shapiro, and Kenny Lynch are thrown out of a dance sponsored by the Carlisle Golf Club, being held at the Crown and Mitre Hotel, for wearing leather jackets into the ballroom.

The Beatles’ tour with Helen Shapiro received some newspaper publicity following an incident on this night in which the group, Kenny Lynch and Shapiro were barred from the Carlisle Golf Club dance at the Crown and Mitre hotel.

Although the press merely mentioned “a member of the supporting groups”, the reason for the trouble was thatRingo Starr was trying to enter the golf club while wearing a leather jacket. The incident took place after the concert at the ABC Cinema on Carlisle’s Warwick Road.

1966: George and Pattie Harrison honeymoon in Barbados

We spent our honeymoon in Barbados in a fabulous rented villa called Benclare at Gibbs Beach, on what is now the Sandy Lane Estate. It was perched on a hill with a sweeping lawn to the main road, views of the sea and a full staff. One day we were out in the garden and the maid said, ‘Oh, look, there’s the Queen of England!’ Sure enough, there she was, driving past in an open-topped car waving to everyone, with Prince Philip sitting beside her, head buried in a newspaper. We spent beautiful sunny days exploring the island, playing in the sea and having romantic dinners at home to the sound of the ever-present tree frogs. We lounged on the beach, went to the famous Sandy Lane Hotel, swam, talked and walked, and I was so happy I thought I might burst. It was bliss to have George to myself, no work pulling either of us and no fans making life a misery.

We didn’t know anyone on the island and there were few tourists at that time, but gradually word got out that we were there so we posed a couple of times for the local press, and then the local dignitaries wanted to be photographed with us. We made a few friends including the eccentric George Drummond, of the banking family, who lived there. He showed us around the island and gave parties for us to meet other locals.

1967- The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio two, EMI Studios, London). Recording begins for “Good Morning, Good Morning”. The song’s title was inspired by a British television commercial for Kellogg’s cornflakes. The Beatles tape eight takes of the basic rhythm track.

1968 -The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). After John and Paul overdub their backing vocals for George’s song “The Inner Light”, the Beatles unsuccessfully try to complete the recording of “Across the Universe”. In the end, John is not satisfied with the song. John had wanted “Across the Universe” to be on the next Beatles’ single, along with “Lady Madonna”, but he readily agrees to give “The Inner Light” that honor instead. Spike Milligan is attending the session as a guest of George Martin, and he requests permission to use “Across the Universe” on a charity album he is putting together to benefit the World Wildlife Fund. The Beatles agree, and the song eventually will appear on the “No One’s Gonna Change Our World” LP, which is not released until December 1969. Wildlife sound effects will be added to “Across the Universe” for that album.
